What does it mean to live in poverty, extreme poverty and below the subsistence level?
1. Life in Poverty
Living in poverty refers to a situation where an individual's or household's income is sufficient to meet basic needs, but at a minimum level. People living in poverty can cover the costs of food, housing and other basic expenses, but they face limitations in access to education, culture and recreation, which leads to social exclusion.
2. Extreme poverty
Living in extreme poverty means that a person or household is unable to meet even the basic needs of life, such as food, housing, clothing or health care. The income of people living in extreme poverty is below the subsistence minimum, which in Poland in 2024 is:
- PLN 901.04 per month for a single person,
- PLN 4,044.23 per month for a family with three children.
These people are exposed to a serious threat to their health and life because their income is insufficient for basic survival.
3. Life below the social minimum
The social minimum is the level of income that allows not only to meet basic needs (such as food, clothes and shelter), but also ensures minimal participation in social life - such as access to education, recreation and culture. Living below the subsistence level means that an individual or household cannot cover all these expenses, leading to social exclusion and limited development opportunities.
In 2024, approximately17.3 million Poleslive below the social minimum. This minimum is more than the subsistence minimum, but the exact amount depends on the type of household and regional conditions.
How much is it per month?
- Minimum of subsistence: PLN 901.04 for a single person.
- Social minimum: depends on family size and local conditions, but is always higher than the subsistence minimum.
